Statement

These three prints were started in a three-week frenzy of block carving and printing during May 2018 in East Tokyo Mokuhanga Studio with extraordinary artist Katsutoshi Yuasa, whose contemporary approach to traditional Japanese art of mokuhanga continues to inspire me.  Mokuhanga is a Japanese woodcut technique of carving into very light and fine plywood (shina), inking the block with flat brushes and pigment mixed with water and perhaps a bit of rice paste and printing on absorgent sheets of lightly dampened Washi (Japanese paper). After shipping prints to my studio in Richmond, I completed them by adding chiyogami collage and images of mushrooms collected in Virginia.   The prints are concerned with migration  of stars, people, mushroom spores.  They ponder the uncertain futures and new possibilities.
